Restoring an outage
When a widespread outage occurs, the repair crew will check the substation first. A substation supplies power to an entire geographical area. Therefore, a problem located here, if it is an isolated problem, can restore power to an entire section of our membership.
From the substation, linemen will work their way out on the main distribution line, first restoring power to the main feeder lines, then to those lines serving groups of homes and finally to those lines running to individual homes. Repairing the line at a home or group of homes is useless if the main line is dead.
During a widespread outage, we ask your patience. We are committed to working as quickly, safely, and efficiently as we can to restore your power.

The diagram above shows the steps we use to restore power.
Repair Steps
- Repair the main distribution line from the substation. Since there is no damage leading to buildings A or B, this would automatically restore their power.
- The problem with the tap line leading from the main line would be repaired, restoring power to buildings C and D.
- After the high-voltage lines are repaired, power to individual homes would be restored.
Now the entire system would be repaired and in good working order.
